Helping You To Overcome Snoring

Do you or your partner suffer from breathing difficulties during sleep such as snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea? You might be pleased to know that dentistry may have a solution for you.

How Can We Help To Stop Snoring?

A series of oral devices or mouthpieces are now available and can be fitted by a dentist that will address your snoring problems by preventing the lower jaw from dropping back during sleep thereby preventing the closure of your airways, which stops you making that snoring noise.

Such a custom-made mouth piece is made from impressions taken of your teeth to ensure they fit you comfortably. Made from a hard wearing plastic, the mouthpiece is worn at night and works by holding the bottom jaw in a slightly forward position. This position opens up your airway significantly allowing you to breathe better and as a result sleep better too.

What Device Do We Use?

We use an appliance called Sleepwell, which is manufactured by the S4S dental laboratory. Sleepwell can be seen as the most patient friendly mandibular advancement splint (MAS) available, and has achieved success rates in over 80% of fully apnoeic patients.

Using advanced technology it is designed with an internal splint fixing, which in lamens terms, means your lips can be closed around the device to prevent any dry mouth or excessive salivation (which is often found in other types of splints). Due to the higher levels of patient comfort with using the device, the fully randomised clinical trials that have been run found over 98% of the patients found the device acceptable.

What Are The Key Benefits Of Sleepwell?

In summary, the main benefits associated with this treatment:

  • Internal fixings result in high patient comfort

  • Full-patient adjustment

  • Soft, slim-lined two-piece device meaning full lateral movement

  • Freedom of movement, reducing likelihood of appliance becoming dislodged

  • Mitigates potential TMJ stress

  • Clinically proven and effective
