Amalgam Fillings

Restoring Cavities (Holes In Teeth)

Amalgam fillings are a type of dental restoration that can be used to fill cavity (hole) in your tooth/teeth. They used to be the go to material used in everyday dentistry for filling teeth.

Modern Day Fillings

In today’s modern dentistry amalgam fillings are used less and less and now the common type of filling we use is a white composite material. This is a more flexible material and it also more aesthetically pleasing as it blends in with your natural teeth color.

Why Are Amalgam Fillings Still Used?

These type of fillings do still play a role in your dental care. They are used less and less and in some circumstances they may be more ideal to repair a tooth.

Are Amalgam Fillings Safe?

There is a lot of controversy surrounding amalgam but the British Dental Association which guides us has stated they are still safe to be used – and any controversial evidence is weak and limited to say that they shouldn’t be used. Our preference is still to use composite white fillings over amalgam.
