In the 21st century, an increasing number of adults are turning to cosmetic dental procedures, emphasising the growing importance of smiles in social interactions and bolstering self-confidence. From ages 8 to 80 and beyond, adults are seeking orthodontic solutions, proving that it’s never too late to achieve the smile you’ve always desired.

Treatment Duration for Adults

A common query surrounds the duration of orthodontic treatment for adults. The answer depends on the complexity of the case. While some treatments are swift and straightforward, others may take a bit longer. Adult bone density, being slightly higher than that of teenagers, may necessitate additional time for adaptation.

Quick-fix orthodontic solutions may seem tempting, but caution is advised, as they may compromise long-term stability.

What to Expect

Brace discomfort is common, with initial aching gradually subsiding. Over-the-counter pain relievers, brace wax, and a soft diet for the first few days can ease the transition.

Embarking on adult orthodontic treatment is a timeless journey towards a healthier, more confident smile. With proper care and collaboration with your dentist, you can navigate this transformative experience, achieving not only aesthetic enhancements but also long-lasting oral health.

Care for Your Fixed Brace

To ensure optimal progress and maintain the integrity of your teeth during treatment, diligent care is crucial. Here are some guidelines:

  • Oral Hygiene
    • Brush your teeth at least three times a day, reaching all areas around the braces.
    • Utilise interdental brushes to clean behind the wire and between brackets.
    • Consider disclosing tablets weekly to assess your brushing effectiveness.
  • Fluoride Mouthwash
    • Use a fluoride mouthwash with a concentration of 0.05% fluoride before bedtime to strengthen teeth.
  • Avoid Damaging Your Brace
    • Steer clear of chewy and crunchy foods; cut up hard items like apples.
    • Refrain from biting pens or picking at your brace.
    • Promptly contact your dentist if your brace breaks.
  • Maintain Tooth Health
    • Limit sticky or chewy sweets; indulge in chocolate occasionally.
    • Avoid fizzy drinks; opt for water, plain milk, or diluted squash.
    • If you play contact sports, use a gumshield for protection.
